Intrusion Detection System, this is normally referred to as the equipment that is used to monitor the network environment to detect unusual or unwanted activity within a network.

IDS systems were first deployed in environments to detect malicious activities and to promote a safer environment.  IDS systems only detected activities which could be detected as unusual or unwanted.  Their sole function was to report activity.
