A firewall is a device, a program or set of devices which are configured to permit, or deny computer traffic between different networks or environments.  Security consultants configure the different environments as different security domains.

Domains within a business or within it's network are described as having a higher security level than that of the internet.  So the firewall can be used to protect the internal network (or domain) from the outside (internet) or lower security domain.
