WIPS
Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) is a system which protects Wireless networks from intrusion, or attacks on the network from unauthorized wireless clients.
Authorized clients are validated by thier MAC Address, permitting them to associate with the Access Point (AP).
A WIPS can protect the network by not permitting unknown (or new) MAC Addresses into the network, known MAC Addresses from accessing foriegn APs (an AP outside of the network), or permitting New APs from being created in the network.
WIPS help to maintain the security which is built into corporate networks, by insuring that the designed security is followed for known clients (or MAC Addresses), and eliminating the potential for unknown clients (or MAC Addresses) attempting to gain access to the network without permission.
WIPS are an essential addition to network security, especially given the fact that the tools used to secure the wireless access points are easily broken with software readily available from the internet.
